Kraft vs SBS: Which Board Is Right for Your Brand?
A plain-language comparison of kraft and SBS paperboard — look, print brightness, cost signals, and when each wins for custom boxes.

Ask three packaging suppliers about “cardboard” and you may get three different answers. In folding cartons, the useful split is often kraft versus SBS (solid bleached sulfate) — two paperboard families with different looks, print behavior, and brand signals.
Here is how to choose without a materials science degree.

What SBS is (in plain English)
SBS is a bright, usually white paperboard with a smooth print surface. When people say “cardboard retail carton,” they often mean an SBS folding carton: crisp folds, vivid CMYK or Pantone color, barcode-friendly panels.
SBS shines when:
- Shelf impact depends on photographic or high-chroma artwork
- You need consistent white for brand color accuracy
- The box is primarily a retail carton, not a shipper
Pair SBS with tuck-end structures for supplements, cosmetics, and small electronics — see tuck end boxes and retail boxes.
What kraft is
Kraft paperboard keeps a more natural, fibrous look. Brown kraft is unbleached; white kraft (or kraft with a white print face) sits between “eco craft” and full retail gloss.
Kraft wins when:
- The brand story leans natural, organic, or minimal
- One- or two-color print is enough
- You want a paper-first feel that photographs well in lifestyle content
Browse kraft packaging and corrugated options if sustainability claims matter to your customer.
Side-by-side comparison
| Factor | Kraft | SBS |
|---|---|---|
| Default look | Natural, warm | Bright, clean white |
| Full-color print | More muted on brown kraft | Excellent color pop |
| Eco perception | Strong (verify recycled content) | Neutral unless you specify recycled grades |
| Typical uses | DTC, artisan, apparel mailer vibes | Retail shelf, beauty, supplements |
| Cost pattern | Often competitive on limited color | Efficient for high-visual retail |
Neither board is “better.” The wrong choice is the one that fights your artwork or your shipping reality.
Print and finish tradeoffs
On kraft: expect colors to shift warmer and duller on brown stock. Designers often build artwork with that in mind — bold line logos, limited palettes, lots of negative space.
On SBS: soft-touch laminate, spot UV, and foil behave predictably. Soft-touch is a matte coating with a velvet hand-feel; it is popular on cosmetic boxes where unboxing is part of the product.
Coatings protect ink from scuffing. Aqueous coatings are common; ask before you promise a specific recyclability story if heavy plastic laminates are in play.
What about corrugated kraft?
Corrugated shippers and mailer boxes often use kraft liners on the outside. That is a different structure from folding-carton kraft: the flute in the middle adds shipping strength. Do not quote a folding carton when you actually need a mailer — and vice versa.
A simple decision path
- Will the box live primarily on a retail shelf? Start with SBS unless brand identity demands kraft.
- Is the box mostly a branded shipper? Consider corrugated kraft mailers first.
- Do you need Pantone-critical color? Lean SBS or white kraft with a print trial.
- Are you making strong eco claims? Ask for recycled content availability and avoid greenwashing language — we will help you stay accurate.

How to brief your quote
When you request a quote, say:
- Kraft, SBS, or “not sure — recommend”
- Print colors (CMYK, Pantone list, or 1–2 color)
- Finish interests (matte, gloss, soft-touch, foil)
- Product weight and channel (retail, DTC, or both)
We will return options with clear tradeoffs instead of a single opaque price.
Bottom line
Choose SBS when color fidelity and shelf polish matter most. Choose kraft when authenticity and a natural aesthetic carry the brand. Many catalogs use both — kraft mailers for shipping, SBS cartons for retail — under one packaging partner.
